UNTITLED, Mar del Plata city, Argentina. October, 2002.
This intervention was held within a Trama scholarship program, in collaboration with RAIN/Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. This program consisted in a workshop on projects development in Mar del Plata, which is seaside city 400 km. from Buenos Aires.
I tried to dare the sensation of belonging which ruled my last works, aplying an impersonal geometrical shape, over the façade and the sidewalk of a private house. The choosen material was a transparent plastic fabric with yellow drawings, normally used as tablecloth. I choose this material in order to bring the home interior to the public space; tablecloth semantic exactly adhered to the façade and its transparency allows to see the time pass and lived hours.
With the geometrical shape, I “separated” the intervention from the house; the fabric could be there or 50 meters further. With the material, I recovered something from that humble family, composed by old people, who spent hours seated around the dining table. Covered by a tablecloth. A daily and silent ritual.
The plastic fabric was glued to the wall, the doors and the windows. It was there, the separation between it and the wall was cero. This meeting of different distances brought a extrange sensation perceived as an beautifying gesture by the neighbours.
An intervention on a house is a symbolic action because it modifies not only the house façade but because it generates a familiar event. A crisis event, which makes intimacy evident. Therefore, artist turns into a secret witness.
